What does the term mental health even mean?
May is Mental Health Awareness Month – a time when we shine a light on something that affects all of us – our mental wellbeing. But what actually is mental health?
Let’s explore it
Mental health is about:
How we feel – are we feeling low, anxious, stressed, peaceful joyful or something else?
How we think – are our thoughts kind and helpful, or negative and overwhelming?
How we cope with life – can we manage day to day challenges, changes and relationships?
It’s not just about having or not having a diagnosis. Everyone has mental health – just like our physical health and can be ever changing depending on what’s happening in our lives.
Why does mental health matter?
Because it affects:
- How we get through our day
- How we connect with others
- How we see ourselves
- Our ability to rest, play, work and enjoy life
Looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after your body. It okay to ask for help, to talk about how you’re feeling, and to take time for yourself.
What is Mental Health Awareness Month?
Every May, people around the world:
- Raise awareness – to help break the stigma around mental health
- Start conversations – because talking makes it easier to get support
- Share resources – so people know where to turn when they are struggling
- Encourage self-care – because small steps can make a big difference
How can you take care of your mental health?
Here are a few gentle suggestions:
- Talk to someone you trust
- Take breaks when you need them
- Get outside for fresh air and sunlight
- Do something creative or fun
- Be kind to yourself (especially when it’s hard)
- Reach out to a counsellor or therapist if you need support
