Meaningful occupations are more than just a job
Most people understand occupation a paid employment, but is is so much more than that and It can be difficult to explain. Occupations have many sides and vary across our lifespan. For example, I am a counsellor but also a wife, mother/fur baby mother, sister and friend. I also enjoy looking after my garden, upcycling furniture and sewing, The things that I do and what are important to me would be around all of these.
Have you ever noticed doing something you enjoy, even something simple, can lift your mood and help you feel more like you again? Whether its painting, gardening, looking after a pet, helping others, or even just making a cup of tea for someone you love. These everyday things can have a big impact on our wellbeing.
So, what is a meaningful occupation?
A meaningful occupation is any activity that feels important or fulfilling to you. It might be creative, social, practical or relaxing. It could be big or small. What matters it that it gives you a sense of meaning, identity or belonging.
Here are a few examples:
- A parent caring for their child
- Someone enjoying an exercise class
- Learning to play an instrument
- Helping a neighbour with their garden
- Volunteering with a local charity
- Walking your dog
These activities might not seem important on the surface but they are – they help us feel grounded, connected and alive.
The importance of belonging
One of our most basic human needs is the need to belong. We all want to feel connected – to feel accepted and valued just as we are. Meaningful occupations can help meet that need.
When we take part in activities that align with our values or bring us into connection with others, we experience a sense of belonging. It might be through a shared interest, a sense of routine, or simply being in a space where we feel safe and understood.
Why are meaningful occupations so important?
When life gets tough – whether its due to anxiety, grief, stress or somethings else – its easy to lose touch with the things that once brought us joy or purpose. You might feel stuck, unmotivated, or unsure of what makes life feel meaningful anymore.
That’s where reconnecting with meaningful occupations can help. They can:
- Give structure to your day
- Support your mental health
- Strengthen your identity (who you are beyond the challenges you’re facing)
- Offer a sense of purpose
- Create opportunities for connection and joy
Sometimes in counselling, we gently explore what activities used to bring you joy – or what new ones you might like to try. It’s not about forcing yourself to be busy, but about noticing what feels right for you and slowly rebuilding that connection to meaning in your everyday life.
A gentle invitation
If you’re reading this and feeling unsure of what feels meaningful to your right now, that’s okay. Sometimes we lose touch with those things during difficult times. You’re not alone – and you’re not broken.
Counselling can be a safe space to explore this without pressure. We can look together at what brings you a sense of joy, connection, or calm – and help you move towards that, one small step at a time.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. Just a willingness to explore is enough.
